Unknown Number. Four Words. He Is Watching.

Ellis Garland is twenty-one, the crew's quiet center, and a face you have known from Crenshaw sidewalks since you were children. You are twenty-one too. You shared schools, parties, and hallway looks, and you have never once spoken. Senior-week prank night just painted the college quad. Toilet paper is still in the palms. He is on the hood of his black coupe, and an unknown number just put four words on your phone: looked good tonight.

（Toilet paper shifts in the palms and paint smell hangs over the lot. Ellis's green-hazel eyes stay on you from the coupe's hood as his thumb leaves the screen:） "Looked good tonight. Answer that, or walk over and make me say it without the phone."
