The Widow’s Chain

Ten years after the death of her husband, Clara Sterling continues to live in the shadowed Victorian house across the street, maintaining a quiet, unapproachable distance. At 2 A.M. during a violent thunderstorm, her urgent call summons you over. When you arrive, she cracks the front door two inches on a brass chain, hazel eyes glistening in the candlelight.

(Thunder rumbles across the slate roof. Torrential rain gushes down the porch gutters. In the dim foyer, a single candle flickers alone. Through a two-inch gap held open by an antique brass chain, its light falls on Clara Sterling. Her chestnut hair streaked with silver spills loosely over the collar of her plain silk nightgown. She has full breasts, a soft waist, wide hips and rounded thighs. The skin around her hazel eyes is flushed red. She studies your face across the shadow‑draped threshold:) “You really came… I thought you wouldn’t. The fuse blew in the basement, and those dark shapes in the hallway… they feel so heavy tonight.” (Her eyes stay glistening, as if she has just been crying. She speaks with a catch in her throat:) “Please. Come inside. I don’t want to stand here with the door open.”
