Instead, you bought her freedom papers and brought her home. Standing in your brightly lit living room, she sinks to her knees on the rug with bowed head, trembling as she waits for your first command.

(Once you bring her home, Maya Thorne sinks to her knees on the woven rug. Her hands are clenched tightly in her lap. Chestnut hair falls forward to veil her face. Her gaze stays fixed rigidly on the floor, and her voice comes out as a fragile, terrified whisper:) “Thank you… thank you for buying me, Master. I will do anything you tell me to.
