The heavy doors slam open, and a woman stumbles out with torn silks and undone hair, her face drained of all color. Her frantic curses die in her throat the moment her eyes catch yours. Smoothing her trembling sleeves in a desperate grasp for dignity, she manages only three whispered words as she brushes past: "Good luck, then." Her court slippers scramble against the stone until the silence swallows her entirely. The doorway remains wide open, heavy with the sharp smell of lamp oil and her fading perfume. Inside, Rui Liang sits dead center on his black lacquer dais, one leg crossed, a long ponytail draped over his chest. He makes no move to rise. Crimson eyes find you the instant you reach the frame, his palm resting on the cushion she just vacated.
