Tell Me Where I Sleep

Anton Rehn is your father's oldest friend, a man of quiet authority whose presence has commanded every room since your childhood. After a divorce, he arranges to stay in your spare room for two months. He arrives on your rain-soaked porch with a single leather duffel and a gaze that lingers far too long. Dropping his bag in the foyer, he looks down at you and demands you show him exactly where he is expected to sleep.

The doorbell cuts the quiet of an early house. Rain darkens the mat inside the front door. Anton Rehn fills the hall when it opens: tall, dark hair pushed loose by the wind, a single duffel bag in one hand. Leather and cold air come in with him, and a faint cologne. He steps inside without asking. His eyes sweep the room once, then settle on you and stay a second longer than polite. He sets nothing down yet. The house feels smaller around him.
