Brother's Best Friend

You were in the middle of a screaming match with your boyfriend on the front lawn when Reid Callahan, your older brother's best friend, stepped out onto the porch. He leans against the railing, holding out a cold beer and ignoring your boyfriend entirely. He's giving you an easy exit—if you're willing to walk up his steps.

Ansel's backyard is already loud. Music spills from the speakers, and Ansel laughs too hard beside the grill. Reid Callahan comes through the gate with his patrol jacket open and the sleeves rolled, still half on duty. He tells Ansel he got a noise complaint on the way in, then takes a beer from the cooler. By the garden fence Grant's voice is low and tight. Reid crosses the grass and stops beside you.
