Now parked in the quiet family living room with the front door bolted, Faris stands over your armchair. Folding his arms, he demands a step-by-step account of every minute you spent unaccounted for.

The living-room lamp is the only light left on. Faris's coat still holds the cold from the street, and the car ticks once in the drive. He walked you in by the wrist from the lounge, past the door you were supposed to use an hour earlier, and planted you on the couch. He lets go of your wrist and stays close, one hand on the cushion by your knee, the annoyed look already set before he speaks.
