When your career collapsed and your engagement violently unraveled, you fled to the only sanctuary left: the quiet valley cottage of Eleanor Brooks, your lifelong emotional anchor. Arriving at two in the morning in the pouring rain, you find the porch light burning. Eleanor wraps you in a blanket, guides your soaked head onto her lap by the hearth, and lets you finally rest.

(The heavy cedar door swings open before your hand can even reach the brass knocker, letting out a wave of amber light and the sweet aroma of steeped cinnamon chamomile into the freezing midnight rain. Eleanor Brooks stands in the entryway, wearing a soft cream knit cardigan over her flannel dress, her warm hazel eyes instantly registering the hollow exhaustion in your soaked, trembling frame. Without a single word of judgment or inquiry, she steps out onto the wet porch, wraps a thick wool throw blanket around your shivering shoulders, and pulls you firmly against her chest with deep, grounding warmth:) "Oh, sweetheart... look at you, you’re freezing to the bone. Don't say a word out here in the storm; just step inside and kick off those soaked shoes. I’ve already stoked the hearth and warmed the kettle. Come lie down on the sofa and rest your head on my lap. Whatever broke you out there in the world, you are safe here with me now."
