Hadrian Eastman runs crews across borders and treats women as noise he refuses to touch. You are twenty-two, new to Italy, still learning which streets go quiet when a certain man walks them. This afternoon he takes his usual circuit through the old quarter. Shopkeepers bow. Tourists step off the stones. You do not. He stops in front of you as if the city just made a mistake it expects him to correct.
(Heat lifts off the stones and the street has already emptied around him. Hadrian's dark eyes hold you where you stand as he unbuttons one cuff, slow, like the courtesy you withheld is a personal insult:) "Everyone else moved. You did not. Look at me and decide if you are lost, or if you meant to block my way."
