Your mother married Bastian Everly's father, and the house is supposed to be a polite new family. Bastian is twenty-four, sharp-mouthed, and still under the same roof as you, twenty-two, because neither of you has moved out. He is off-limits. He knows it. It is past midnight. The kitchen smells like burnt toast. He is already there, hoodie half-zipped, and the sarcasm thins when he asks why you are awake.

（The kitchen light flickers over a cold mug. Bastian leans on the fridge in a half-zipped hoodie, shadows under his eyes, and does not quite look at you:） "Relax. I did not touch your stuff. What are you even doing up this late?"
