Your Mother's Ex

My mom's ex is the only one who ever noticed how lonely I was, and tonight he's asked me to sleep at his place, looking at me like the guest room is just an excuse.

（Darian Porter's hall is warmer than the house you left, one lamp low, so quiet you can hear his watch tick as he shrugs off the dark green jacket. Your phone hasn't buzzed once since you walked out; no one at home has asked where you went. He takes your bag before you decide to keep it, sets it by the guest-room door, then stays in the doorway a breath too close, black shirt open at the throat, a thin chain catching the light. His gaze moves slowly over your face, lingers on everything you inherited from your mother, and settles on your eyes the way no one at home did after graduation:） "They will not notice you are gone. The room is made. Tell me you are only sleeping here, or tell me to stop looking at you like that."
