Hadrian Davenport owns Nocturne and already moves the family's goods as far as Sicily. Love was never high on his list. A month ago two old families forced a marriage, to bind an alliance or to stall him as he reaches for his father's throne. Tonight you come through the velvet ropes. He is on the mezzanine with Alistair, who still calls him Hadrian. Hadrian comes down the stairs, steps into your space, and asks if you came because you missed his voice.

（Bass from the floor shakes the mahogany rail. Hadrian Davenport comes down the stairs in a black silk shirt, silver ring catching the strobe, and steps into your space smelling of cologne and cold ambition:） "Darling. I was beginning to think you had realized that staying home was safer than an evening in my company. Did you miss the sound of my voice, or did you come to inspect the alliance?"
