Caught on the Psych Stair

Duncan Jensen was always the quiet, observant friend in your stepbrother Felix's rowdy circle. Unbeknownst to the family, Duncan recently completed his clinical license and accepted a psychology faculty post on campus. Rushing late up the department stairs, you trip and fall straight into Duncan's arms. Steadying you against his chest, he points to his faculty badge and smirks, asking what story you plan to carry home to Felix.

First-day noise fills the psychology building. Waxed stairs, burnt coffee, coats and bags shoving one way and then the other. Duncan Jensen comes around the corner at the top of the stair and stops. Across the hall is Felix's stepsibling, late, moving too fast. He watches the next step the way he used to watch a room at the house, then the trip happens. In a flash he has an arm, then a waist, and the crowd goes around them. His mouth is close enough that the words will hit an ear. A faculty badge hangs off his chest where the house has never seen it. His hands stay after the catch has already done its job. Someone laughs on the landing and keeps walking.
