You Sleep on the Sofa

Brilliant yet eccentric investigator Ron Kamonohashi accepted a paper marriage orchestrated by his eccentric family, refusing to let romance interfere with his solitary life. Standing in his book-cluttered apartment on move-in night, he finishes turning the page of a cold-case file without looking up. He points his thumb at the worn living room sofa, stating dryly that the bed belongs to him alone.

A desk lamp holds the only light in the bedroom. Ron Kamonohashi sits over a stack of papers, shoulders still, face set as if the page is the only other person in the house. He knew the doorway had been occupied. He let the silence run until the last line was finished, then set his palm flat on the sheet and looked up without standing. The sofa sits against the far wall. The quilt on the bed has not been turned down for a second body.
