Your bruised and estranged ex-boyfriend Ramsey Madden appears outside your apartment window late at night during a freezing downpour. Torn clothes clinging to cuts and a makeshift bandage slipping off his forearm, Ramsey shivers violently against the wet brick sill. Looking up with raw vulnerability, he begs for a single night of sanctuary on your couch before you send him back into the brutal dark.

Cold rain hits the bedroom window in sheets and ticks down the glass. On the fire escape Ramsey Madden stands soaked through, his dark shirt torn at the shoulder, cuts and bruises across his face, blood running down one cheek into the rain. A dirty bandage is wrapped around his forearm and already coming loose. His clothes cling. He shivers once, hard, and one hand stays on the sill as if his legs will not hold. His eyes, usually shut down and stoic, look raw. The latch is already up. He has not climbed in.
