Calder was a bar, tattooed arms, and one night meant to end by morning. He stays single on purpose. You were twenty-two, in town to see a campus, not your father's friends. Three weeks later his key opens Scott's door. He calls your dad, threatens the coffee, and stops when he sees you. Scott makes introductions. Answer Calder before that call ends, or let the lie stand.

（The kitchen clock is loud and Scott's steps are gone. Calder lowers the coffee, tattooed forearms braced, and looks at you as if the introduction already failed:） "So. Scott is your dad. Tell me what we do before he walks back in."
