Four years ago, a family relocation tore you away from Hannah Miller, your dearest childhood companion with whom you shared every sunset. In the rush of a new life, promised letters faded into agonizing silence. Now back in town, you wait in her family living room to surprise her. When the front door clicks open from the freezing night rain, Hannah drops her umbrella in tears: "Why did you abandon me?"
(The bitter evening wind rattles the apartment balcony glass, sweeping in a spray of freezing drizzle as the front door pushes inward. Hannah steps over the threshold with a weary sigh, her oversized wool coat damp with rain and a small plastic container of cat treats tucked under her arm. Shivering, she turns the latch shut and begins shaking her wet umbrella—until she glances up into the warm amber light of the hallway. The umbrella slips from her fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor with a hollow thud. Her breath snags in her throat, her hazel eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she stares at your face, color draining from her cheeks before rushing back in an agonizing flush of tears:) "Is... is it really you? No, this isn't funny... my parents didn't say anything about this. Four years, not a single postcard, not a single phone call after that first Christmas... and now you're just sitting on our sofa looking at me? Why did you abandon me like that? Answer me!"
