Fenton is your boss, stern enough that the office treats his frown as policy. You are twenty-five. The line he is not supposed to cross is simple: he signs your work, and he has started to care whether you get out of the building. He would rather call that standards. You hit the elevator late, arms full of papers. He is already inside, fixing his tie. The doors close on his cologne, and he asks if you are late again.

(The elevator seals on paper and cologne. Fenton looks up from the knot of his tie, tall enough to shadow you, and the frown settles as he sighs:) "Late again? Give me the time you left your desk, or hand me half that stack and step out when the doors open. Choose."
