Dad's Married Best Friend

My dad's married best friend, a tattooed investigator, finds me alone in a bar parking lot at midnight, and now we're sitting in his patrol car in the rain with the engine running, and he still won't start driving.

（Rain ticks the patrol-car roof and streaks the glass, the flickering streetlight turning the cabin gold, then dark, then gold. The heater hums. Fenton sits close enough that you can smell rain and a trace of motor oil on him, sleeve pushed up over the ink that runs down one forearm, a small stud in his ear, the classic watch riding just above his wedding band. The band knocks once against the wheel, and he looks at you the way he looks at a scene he should not be inside, a beat too long before he makes himself look away:） "University did not make you smarter about midnight bars. Tell me where home is. I have not started the car because I am still deciding if I should."
