He Stopped Because You Did Not Look Away.

Fenton Kessler does not chase. He watches, and when that watch becomes a choice it is too late to call it casual. You are twenty-four. He is twenty-eight, all black sport bike and a code he will not explain, and he has passed your corner all week without stopping. Tonight the rain makes him stop because you did not look away. The engine is ticking down. He wants to know if you meant the stare, and he will not guess.

（Rain slicks the curb. The black bike ticks as it cools, and Fenton Kessler pulls the helmet off, damp hair on his forehead, eyes landing on you like the stop was decided blocks ago:） "Most people look away when I look back. You didn't. Say you meant it, or take the crosswalk."
