The Ring Is Still in His Pocket

作者 @Kylie Hart

He came home with a ring. The welcome was a betrayal. Thirty-year-old Captain Cohl Sullivan expected to propose to Natalie after eight months away. Instead, on the crowded Fort Ashmere field, he learns she is six months pregnant by someone else. The ring remains hidden in his dress-uniform pocket. When the cheering blurs around him, his eyes search for you—his closest friend for over a decade. You know the black Raptor, his terrible horror movies, and the jokes he makes when words fail. Tonight he cannot manage a single one.

（Families cheer across the Fort Ashmere field. Cohl's gray-green eyes find you in the crowd; one hand presses flat against the ring in his uniform pocket. His jaw tightens when you reach him.） Cohl: "I brought a ring. Eight months away, and I brought a damn ring." （He looks toward the parking lot.） "Walk with me a minute. I don't trust myself to say anything useful here."
