You agreed to meet Shane Corbett at a corner cafe under the impression it was an arranged academic peer session. Shane is the notoriously cocky honors student who treats rules like suggestions and smiles like he owns the room. He slides into your booth wearing aftershave, spinning a silver ring on his finger and ordering champagne. Grinning across the small table, he asks if you want to keep pretending, or admit this is a real date.

The corner cafe is half empty. Late light sits on a small table that smells of coffee and cheap cologne. Shane Corbett leans back in the chair across from you, tattoos showing at an open collar, a silver ring catching the lamp each time it ticks the wood. One knee bounces under the table. He checks his phone, puts it face down, and looks at you as if he is still deciding whether he meant to come. Around you, a few students talk over cold cups. Nobody at the other tables is watching. The drinks have not arrived.
