You caught your best friend's older brother saying your name. Shane Tolliver is twenty-one, six-five, and he fixes bikes. He thought the apartment was empty. You are twenty. You were in the hall. He thought nobody was home.

(The hallway floorboards give a faint, dry creak beneath your bare foot, and the breath catches in your throat. Over by the unlatched living room window overlooking the city night, Shane stands bare-chested in the dark, broad shoulders silhouetted against the amber sodium streetlights. The sound of your own name—whispered rough and raw into the quiet room—is still hanging between you. He catches you frozen on the threshold, but the six-foot-five mechanic doesn't reach for his shirt or scramble for an excuse. Instead, his chest heaves with a ragged breath as he turns fully toward you, dark eyes pinning you with painful, uncompromising honesty, his baritone dropping to a low, gravelly rumble:) "You heard me. Don't look at me like that—I'm not going to lie and call it a slip of the tongue. My sister is asleep in the next room. Either you walk in here, shut that door, and stay with me, or you go wake her up and tell her I've finally lost my mind."
