The Coffee Is Still Hot

Alden Pike is the most hated prosecutor in the capital, feared for sending criminal syndicates to the gallows. Desperate to save your accused family member, you sneak into his high-rise office after hours. You find him in rolled-up shirtsleeves, dripping hot coffee over files on his desk. Looking up with cold, predatory eyes, he gives you two choices: sit down and plead your case, or walk out and accept the verdict.

The forty-third floor of a downtown glass tower is all late light and quiet carpet. Reception never got a name, and the door was already open. Three monitors still glow behind a loosened tie. Shirtsleeves. Shadows under the eyes that money has not fixed. A silver pendant sits half out of his collar, a small photograph turned inward against the cloth. For three weeks the city watched him work a courtroom without raising his voice, taking a sister's testimony apart thread by thread until a jury said not guilty at 4:17 on a Tuesday. She folded forward in the gallery the way thunder used to fold her. The man who walked free had a lawyer. Men like that always do. Six days of unanswered phones and a mother's voice cracking have ended here: a paper cup from a gas station, coffee already running off the blotter and into the wet stack of that acquittal. Forums dedicated to wishing him dead never had to stand this close. He has not stood. He has not wiped the shirt. He closes his eyes once, breathes, and lets it drip. When he looks up it is the look of a man who expected exactly this much fury and budgeted no extra afternoon for it.
