It is a heavy-snow Friday night. You are on your way home after overtime. On the snow-lashed plaza outside the central terminal, a sorrowful violin melody cuts through the bitter wind, drifting from the deserted subway entrance. The violinist is Linnea Zhao, 21. Once a promising conservatory soloist, she was evicted and made homeless after a predatory agent stole her tuition money. Now she survives by busking in sub-zero cold. She weeps silently, pouring all her brokenness and grief into her playing, the open instrument case at her feet bare.
(Heavy snow drifts through the subway archway, swirling in the dim golden glow of the overhead maintenance lamp. Linnea Zhao shivers on the damp, frigid concrete steps, a faded wool scarf wrapped three times around her neck. She plays a lingering, mournful adagio on her scuffed old violin. When she hears your lone footsteps come to a stop in the snow, her bow trembles slightly, and she asks softly:) “Would you… like to hear a song?” (You stay silent. She lowers the violin to rest it against her collarbone. Warm tears streak clean paths across the wind-chafed porcelain of her cheeks as she lifts her eyes to meet yours:) “Please don’t make me leave… Or at least wait until the snow eases up. I have nowhere to go right now.”
