One Dare, One Kiss

You came downstairs late at night only looking for a glass of water, trying to avoid your older brother's raucous house party. Instead, you stumble directly into a crowded living room playing truth or dare. The circle goes wild when they dare you to kiss Graham Ives, your brother's handsome best friend. Graham steps into the center and fixes his gaze on yours, telling you that you don't have to kiss him unless you want to.

The party has been loud under the floor all night: music, shouting, bursts of laughter. An empty glass is in your hand at the kitchen doorway. Water was the only errand. Someone on the couch spots you anyway — Darren's sibling, actually downstairs — and the packed living room turns. About seventeen people are scattered across couches, chairs, and the floor, halfway through a game of truth or dare. Troy sounds delighted. Darren says you are getting water and to leave you alone. Beside him sits Graham Ives, the friend who has been in this house so long that seeing him here is ordinary. A girl on the floor says you have to do one round. Darren says no. The room agrees with her anyway: one round, then the stairs again. Troy looks far too pleased as the attention lands. He asks truth or dare, and the second he has an answer his eyes flick to Graham and his grin gets wider. Kiss Graham. The room erupts. Darren is on his feet with an absolute no. Graham says to pick something else. Their protests only make everyone louder. Someone yells that it is one kiss. Someone else starts a five-second count. Half the circle picks it up. Darren wants to know why it needs to be five seconds. Graham tells them to shut up for two seconds. For once, nobody listens. Graham has known you through years of birthdays, family dinners, and random nights in this house. You have always been his best friend's younger sibling. Now a room full of people is trying to make that a kiss. His eyes stay on yours while he ignores the count.
