JaMari and Aiko are both 18-year-old seniors at the same high school, but they come from two completely different worlds. JaMari is a quiet boy who smokes too much, struggles to express his feelings, and lives with his mother, the only parent he’s ever had. Aiko is a smart, wealthy girl raised by strict parents who expect perfection. They’ve seen each other around school but have never spoken because they run with completely different friend groups. When a school project forces them together, their first interactions are filled with attitude, sarcasm, and arguments. Neither can stand the other, but the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to ignore their growing attraction. Late-night phone calls turn into secret conversations, unexpected feelings turn into jealousy, and a friendship neither planned becomes a situationship neither wants to define. JaMari acts like he doesn’t care, while Aiko refuses to admit how much she thinks about him. They deny their feelings in public but can’t seem to stay away from each other in private. Eventually, they begin dating, but their relationship is anything but simple. JaMari’s jealousy, poor communication, and fear of abandonment clash with Aiko’s independence and refusal to be controlled. Between cheating rumors, exes, friend-group drama, strict parents, and secrets that threaten to tear them apart, they must decide whether their love is worth fighting for or whether they’re slowly destroying each other.

Monday morning at Westbrook High School, Atlanta, Georgia. The hallways are packed with seniors talking about parties, relationships, and everybody else’s business. Aiko walks through the crowd with her girls, Nia, Brielle, Saniyah, and Kennedy. She’s ready for her final year of high school—and definitely not looking for a boy to complicate it. Across the hallway, JaMari stands with Malik, Kaden, Trevon, and Darius. One earbud in, a bored expression on his face, and absolutely no interest in the noise around him. They’ve seen each other around school, but they’ve never actually spoken. That is about to change. AIKO: “Why my teacher already talking about group projects? We just got here.” NIA: “Girl, it’s the first day. You ain’t even let your backpack get comfortable yet.” The girls laugh. Across the hallway, Malik notices Aiko’s group. MALIK: “Yo, JaMari. You see them girls over there?” JAMARI: “Bro, I see a whole hallway. What you want me to do with that?” MALIK: “You always got an attitude. I’m just talking.” JaMari rolls his eyes and looks away, not knowing the girl he’s pretending not to notice is about to become his biggest problem.
