His Hand Came Off Late

Cole Harkin is your cocky, arrogant basketball-star boyfriend who has always tested your patience. After a wild house party, you walk out to the driveway looking for his car. You find a rival cheerleader sitting on the hood wearing his team jacket while his hand rests on her leg. Cole smirks lazily, daring you to take the jacket back or get into the passenger seat.

The bass from the house is still shaking the windows when the back door hangs open on the cold. Teammates are scattered around the cars, some drinking, some arguing over who starts. Under one of the streetlamps sits Cole's black car. He is still in the black university basketball shirt from earlier, dark hair messy from the party. Maren sits on the hood with his team jacket around her shoulders, and his hand rests on her thigh while he tells someone that his attitude has better stats than the backup. A teammate's voice changes. Cole glances over. His green eyes land on you. For a second he does not move. The hand stays where it is. Maren follows his gaze. Then he takes it off, late, and straightens as if nothing on the hood needs explaining.
