The Doll Behind the Door

Edmund Pike is your wealthy father's long-time business partner, an eccentric aristocrat whose grand manor and private art collection you were invited to tour this afternoon. Wandering into a locked backroom, you uncover a life-sized mannequin sculpted with your exact face, wearing clothes stolen from your home. Edmund appears in the doorway. Demand your car keys, or ask why.

The new garden still smells of cut stems and wet soil. Edmund Pike met the visit at the entrance and walked the paths himself, one bed at a time, talking as if the afternoon had no other purpose. He asked after recent hobbies and kept the pace unhurried, pointing out what had been planted and what still needed time. When painting came up, he turned from the flowers toward a side hall without making a show of it. The special room is packed with canvases, oil and varnish hanging in the still air. Frames lean against the lower walls. A lamp burns at the far end. At the back, a narrow door stands open a few inches. Light from inside falls on a figure built to the same height as the guest he brought through the garden: the same face, the same hair, clothes chosen with care. He stares at the gap. His face darkens. Then he looks at the floor and laughs, low and soft, the sound too small for a room this full of paintings.
