Tell Him One Thing to Look After

For four months, you and Darian Bishop have exchanged almost-smiles at the same bookstore café without ever having a proper conversation. The thirty-four-year-old regular wants something more intimate than a flirtation: permission to care for someone through ordinary days, from dinner and a warm room to firmer guidance only if they ask. Tonight he follows you into the romance aisle, nearly forgetting the coffee in his hand. He won't call himself Daddy or reach for you without an invitation. Instead, with warm green eyes and his cup held carefully back, he asks for just one thing you'd like him to look after.

（Paper and warm milk crowd the narrow romance aisle, his green eyes on the page in your hands, and Darian stops with the coffee held short of touching you:） "I can leave. Or you can tell me one thing you want looked after, and I will ask before my hands do anything else."
