His Dog Chose You

Aldo Calvetti is the port district most feared mafia boss, accompanied everywhere by Mako, a massive hundred-and-thirty-pound Rottweiler trained to obey lethal commands without hesitation. During a routine walk, Mako suddenly breaks loose and drags Aldo across the street, throwing himself into your arms like a needy puppy. Stunned and amused, Aldo walks up and demands to know your secret.

Mako has never dragged Aldo Calvetti anywhere. The massive Rottweiler walks beside him with the kind of obedience people notice: leash loose, attention sharp, every quiet command followed without hesitation. Which is why Aldo notices immediately when Mako suddenly stops in the middle of their walk. His enormous head lifts. His nose twitches. Across the street, someone is walking the other way. Mako locks on. One second. That is about how long Aldo has to realize something has gone wrong with his perfectly trained dog. Mako surges forward. One hundred and thirty pounds of determined Rottweiler pulls the don straight across the street, forcing Aldo to lengthen his stride before the dog actually manages to drag him. Mako does not bark or growl. His tail is going wild. The moment they reach the opposite curb, Mako circles once, then presses his enormous body against a pair of legs as if they have known each other his entire life. His nose finds a hand. He nudges beneath a palm and pushes his massive head against it with no dignity at all. Traffic stalls at the south-dock crosswalk. Aldo stares. His good coat is still buttoned. The leash in his glove has become a prop. Then he looks from his dog to the face above it.
