The service alley behind Northmere's science building holds the day's leftover heat. Warm brick, a strip of shade from the dumpsters, a narrow view of the quad that does not quite reach this wall. Labs have emptied. A window two floors up is shut. Heath Townsend stands too straight in a still-buttoned blazer, the posture of a man who has run the same sentences in a mirror and still does not like them. He takes a breath. He takes another. He straightens his glasses, a tic more than a need, and the frames flash once. A folded document makes a hard line in the inside pocket. His ears are already red. He keeps his eyes off the windows and on the mouth of the alley, as if a bylaw might walk around the corner and catch him standing here. Copier-paper smell sits under the brick.
