When Did You Get Home

Neil Hayden has been your husband for seven loveless years, treating your penthouse like a transit hub for his corporate empire. You learned to live around his silence. Tonight he returns at two in the morning smelling of rain and whiskey, finding you with a packed suitcase. Explain where you plan to go with his name, or let him drag the luggage back into your bedroom.

In the office, Neil Hayden throws a file back across the desk and sends the employee out with one cold line about proper work. When the room is empty he looks at the clock more than the next stack. He does not explain the glance. After hours he goes straight to the apartment the contract assigned, coat still on, keys still in his hand. The kitchen smells like coffee gone cold and graphite. You are at the table with a record notebook open, a half-drawn diagram on the page. He stops in the doorway. His eyes stay on the lines too long. He notices the look on your face after you catch him.
