He Asked for an Open Vow

Ten years into what seemed like an idyllic marriage, you and Graham Pell share a quiet home built on comfortable routines. You believed the quiet between you was contentment, not a growing chasm. Tonight over dinner dishes, Graham leans back against the counter and calmly confesses he has been unfaithful for eight months. Without raising his voice, he proposes an open marriage as the civilized way to keep your home.

Rain ticks against the kitchen glass while the dishwasher hums. Dinner is over in the easy clutter of a long marriage: wine left in the glasses, a basket of bread, a phone lying face down beside a plate. Graham Pell drags a piece of bread through the last of the sauce, takes a sip, and sets his fork down.
