The Quad Went Quiet

Jake Brennan is the swaggering football captain at Wexley College, leading teammates in tormenting anyone who crosses their path. You endured months of his sarcastic sneers in humiliated silence. Today on the quad, he trips you before the whole campus. Snapping in fury, you leap to your feet and grab him by the collar. Strike his smirking face in front of the team, or wait to see what he does.

The east quad is packed. Sun lies across the lawns, and students sit in groups or cut between the buildings. Jake Brennan stands in the middle of the main path with his friends, black blazer open, rings catching the light, the easy grin of a captain who has never had to move aside. A foot goes out as if by accident. Notebooks scatter across the concrete. Laughter rolls around the loose ring of the football team. He leans into the joke the way he always does, arms crossed, watching pages get picked up one by one. One of his friends says maybe tutoring would help. Jake's grin is already there. For that, he says, you'd first need a brain. More laughter. Then the picking-up stops. Someone is on their feet. For the first time this term, a pair of eyes does not look down. A fist closes in the collar of his shirt. The whole campus goes silent. No one laughs. No one moves. Jake looks at the fist, first surprised. Then something dangerous flashes in his eyes. A slow grin spreads across his mouth. His teammates watch and do not step in. The air between the two of you feels tight enough to snap.
