Take the Couch Tonight

Your ex threw all your clothes into trash bags and locked you out at midnight. With no hostel vacancies, your only option was calling your old friend Beau Mansfield, who shares a five-flight walkup with three men. Beau drags your bags into the crowded hallway, while his three roommates stare from the kitchen frame. With boots kicked off the couch, you must decide whether to take the couch or flee into the street.

A trash bag of clothes sat on the fifth-floor landing. No elevator. Five flights still lived in the air. The hall was narrow: three doors, one bathroom, kitchen light cutting the dark. Beau Mansfield had opened in sweatpants, hair a mess, and pulled the bag across the threshold without a question. A tall man with dark circles leaned on the kitchen frame, a medical textbook in one hand, looking at the plastic, then at Beau. On the couch a stocky man with ash-blond hair had glanced up from his phone. The third door opened on a short, wiry man in paint stains, rubbing his face. Beau's hand found a shoulder and stayed there, firm, not relaxed, already set for a fight he had not warned anyone about.
