You Tapped His Back

You were having an ordinary afternoon running errands through a bustling shopping mall, weaving between boutique windows. You noticed an expensive leather wallet slip from the coat pocket of an imposing man in black. Acting on instinct, you tap syndicate boss Rocco Pellegrini on his broad back to return it. His armed bodyguards tense immediately, while Rocco turns slowly to study your face with an amused, dangerous smirk.

The mall is busy that afternoon. People move through the wide hallways with shopping bags, music and voices drifting from the stores. A few meters ahead, a man in dark clothes walks at an unhurried pace, an expensive watch on his wrist. Two other men hang back a little behind him. A black wallet has already left his pocket and landed on the floor. He does not notice. He does not turn for the voices that called him. Then he stops without warning. The bump lands on his back before anyone can brake. He turns slowly. His gaze sweeps once, then settles, questioning, on the leather still held out toward him.
