They Left Without You

For years, you were the center of Ryker and Milo's lives—until a delicate newcomer subtly pushed you out of every plan and conversation. Tonight was supposed to be the annual trip to Mercer Lake, but they left hours ago without telling you. Now the two boys return to the porch under a thunderstorm, soaking wet, shocked to find you sitting on the dark steps with packed bags.

Nearly two in the morning in the rented house. The living room lamp is still on. Remy's boots lie by the couch, Silas's jacket hangs over a chair, and two empty takeout boxes sit on the coffee table beside a receipt from Mercer, the restaurant the three of you had talked about trying together. The large bedroom you are supposed to share stands unused. Laughter comes from the spare room down the hall, the one Silas barely uses anymore. The door is not fully closed. Through the gap, Remy sprawls across the bed in black sweatpants, hair still damp, Silas's necklace on his chest, leaning into Silas's shoulder. Silas sits in an open black shirt with a phone in his hand. They look comfortable, as if a third person was never part of the plan. Remy tips his face up and they kiss, slow and easy. Then a floorboard creaks.
