In the office, the team's banter freezes when Hannah blurts out the one thing everyone secretly knows: Jake smiles around Jennifer. His expression doesn't change, but the silence is deafening. You walk in just as Jake's jaw tightens, and every eye turns to you, waiting to see how you'll handle the tension.
The sign outside the office building simply read: Gentleman’s Services Discretion. Precision. Results. Nobody walking past the old brick building in downtown Bucharest ever really understood what the company did. Some thought it was security work. Others guessed private investigations. One old lady on the corner insisted they were “probably spies.” Honestly, she wasn’t entirely wrong. Inside the third-floor office, chaos was already underway. “Jake,” Kol called from across the room, spinning lazily in his chair, “you know blinking twice at the printer won’t make it work faster.” Jake didn’t even look up. Tall, sharp-eyed, and permanently dressed like he was attending a military briefing, he slammed another folder onto the desk. “The printer is inefficient,” he replied flatly. “No,” Kol said. “You terrify electronics.” Molly snorted from her design station, where she was sketching logos for a client. Her desk looked like an art store had exploded across it—markers, fabric samples, coffee cups, and sticky notes everywhere. “He does kind of stare at machines like they insulted his family.” Jake finally looked at them. Silence. Molly immediately looked back down at her tablet. “Beautiful weather today.” Kol grinned wider. Teasing Jake was one of his favorite hobbies. Mostly because Jake never reacted the way people expected. He didn’t yell. He didn’t threaten. He simply stared with the intensity of a disappointed headmaster. Which somehow made it funnier. At the far end of the office, six surveillance feeds glowed across Kol’s massive monitor setup. Nobody knew exactly how Kol got access to half the cameras he used. “Public sources,” he always claimed. Nobody believed him. Jennifer walked out of her office holding a tablet and a coffee. Instant silence. Not because she was scary. Well… not exactly. Jennifer carried herself with calm confidence that naturally made people listen. She didn’t joke around nearly as much as the others, but unlike Jake, she didn’t act like smiling was illegal. She glanced around the room. “Why is the intern camera feed showing a cat?” Kol immediately pointed at another screen. “Counterpoint: look at him.” A tiny orange cat was sleeping on top of a delivery truck. Jennifer sighed softly, though the corner of her mouth twitched upward. “Fine. Five more minutes.” “Victory,” Kol whispered dramatically. Jake folded his arms. “We are wasting company resources.” “We’re improving morale,” Molly corrected. Before Jake could respond, the office door burst open. Hannah stormed in carrying three bags of candy and a motorcycle helmet under one arm. “I bring sugar and bad decisions!” “You’re late,” Jake said immediately. Hannah tossed him a candy bar. “You’re welcome.” He caught it automatically. Everyone froze. Kol’s eyes widened. “Oh my god. He accepted it.” “It was reflex,” Jake answered instantly, placing the candy on the desk like dangerous evidence. Hannah grinned. “Sure, tough guy.” Unlike Jake’s sharp seriousness, Hannah moved through life like every day was an adventure waiting to happen. She drove for the company—cars, motorcycles, vans, once apparently a fishing boat—and somehow managed to flirt with random strangers everywhere she went. Last week she’d gotten free parking by complimenting a traffic officer’s eyebrows. Nobody understood how. Jennifer looked at Hannah. “Did you finish the pickup?” “Done.” Hannah tossed a flash drive toward her. “Client files secured. Also the cashier at the gas station asked for my number.” Jake pinched the bridge of his nose. “You flirt during missions?” Hannah blinked. “Jake, I flirt while buying toothpaste.” Kol nearly fell out of his chair laughing. Jennifer plugged in the flash drive and reviewed the files calmly. “Good work,” she said. Kol leaned back again. “You know, Jake would probably live longer if he smiled occasionally.” “I smile.” Molly whispered, “I’ve never seen it.” “He smiles when he's around Jennifer." Hannah says, casually, like she didn't just trew a bomb.
