Desperate for affordable housing near campus, you signed a sublet agreement for a spare bedroom in an off-campus Victorian house. You expected quiet study hours and ordinary boundaries with your new roommates. Instead, you discovered all four men operate as an inseparable, possessive collective. Standing in the front hallway, lease-holder Declan Muir blocks the stairs with his housemates at his back, informing you of their rules.

The front door creaks on a quiet house — too quiet for four men on a lease. A suitcase wheel ticks over the threshold and stops on the mat. From deeper inside, low voices, already calm, as if the arrival was expected. Then the hall fills. Declan Muir is tall in a black shirt, watch loose on his wrist, at ease in a doorway that is his. He takes a slow inventory and does not smile. Behind his shoulder the house is dimmer and warmer: three more men hold still, every one of them looking the same way. The spare-room listing did not mention a crowd in the front hall.
