He Waited on the Stairs

Marek Solen is your husband of one year and the icy head of an automotive empire. Rich, detached, and controlling, he always resented the overtime hours of your outside job. You sneak in past midnight to find his imposing frame blocking the dim stairwell, arms crossed and jaw set. He stares at the purse on your shoulder and demands your immediate resignation before you take another step.

The front door has barely shut. Outside, the black sedan still ticks in the drive, cooling after the last trip home. The entry is dim. Marek Solen stands at the foot of the stair with his arms crossed, the same way he has stood on every late night this year. He walks over and stops close. He is big and tall, and his height cuts the hall light. His face shows nothing. His sharp eyes go to the bag on your shoulder and stay there.
