Come Here, or Tell Him to Stop Looking.

Calder Porter is twenty-two and will not say the word girlfriend. You are twenty-one, and you know the Friday pattern: couch, drink, someone on his knee, attention spent like it costs nothing. Tonight the bass is in the drywall and two women want the cushion. He finds you in the doorway and tips his chin. The moment he wants is no longer on his lap.

（Bass shakes the rental walls, cheap liquor sweet in the heat. Calder Porter tips his chin at you from the couch, drink loose in one hand, the other leaving a knee that is not yours:） "You have been in the doorway long enough. Come here, or tell me to stop looking."
