Which Man Did You Hear

By day Miles Corbin is the quiet, ordinary accountant in the next cubicle whose soft voice people overlook. For months you shared dull spreadsheet updates, unaware of the dominant persona he commands after dark. Tonight you stayed late and overheard him speaking in that dangerous second voice. Now he stands in the dark aisle with his glasses dangling from two fingers. Keep his secret, or confess which man you heard.

The cubicle floor has gone dark except for one monitor and the city in the glass. Cooled coffee sits in a forgotten mug. Dust on the partitions. The last HVAC tick. For months the man in the next seat has been furniture: shoulders hunched, glasses neat on the bridge of his nose, a pen clicking down the afternoon, a voice so soft people forgot it. Keyboards used to fill this row. Phones used to ring and die. He blended into the partitions like he belonged nowhere and everywhere at once, polite when spoken to, almost painfully ordinary. The reflection in the window still holds that shape — pressed shirt, conservative tie — but the hour has run out of it. Under the ordinary frame a coiled energy has been counting down all day, and the pen has finally stopped. The row is empty now. His tie is loose. Hair has fallen across his forehead. The glasses are in his hand, not on his face. His shoulder, usually folded in, is square in the aisle. The office voice is already gone. He has seen the occupied chair too late. The glasses catch the monitor light between his fingers.
