Spare Me the Reason

Officer Marcus Merrill is notorious on highway patrol for his vigilance and zero tolerance for speeding excuses. You took the interstate at ninety miles an hour, only to see flashing blue lights fill your mirror. His boots crunch on gravel as he approaches your window, flashlight cutting through the glass. He takes your license without looking down, gray eyes fixing on yours with cold authority. Explain yourself, or take the ticket.

Red and blue strobe a stopped car's mirror. Heavy boots cross the asphalt. Two knuckles knock the window. Gray eyes come level through the glass, hard and unyielding, and they do not blink with the lights.
