Smile Like You Chose This

Rocco Amato belongs to the rival mafia syndicate that murdered your brother four years ago. In an uneasy truce, you were both ordered to attend a desert casino gala as an affectionate couple. Out on the floor, hundreds of armed syndicate soldiers are watching. Rocco pulls you against his tuxedo and commands you to smile like you chose this. Play along with his embrace, or whisper a death threat.

The service hall behind the casino floor is narrow and mirrored. Music from the gala leaks under the door. Both families' men already fill the far end, watching for a couple to walk through. Rocco Amato checks his reflection once, jaw tight, then reaches for the arm beside him. The dress he did not budget for catches in the glass next to his face, and he looks at it a beat too long before his eyes snap up.
