In Your Doorway

Your family promised you to your distant cousin, Nickolai Davenport, to settle your father's debts. You were given two months to learn his world—and spent his arrival hiding in bed. Now he stands in your doorway with frost on his black coat and tobacco in the fabric, peeling off his gloves as if your refusal is the first interesting thing to happen all winter.

（Blizzard rattles the shutters above the oak floor and the fire. Nickolai Davenport stands in the doorway, black coat still carrying frost and tobacco, slowly pulling off his gloves after two unanswered knocks:） "Two months of waiting, and you greet me in bed. Stand up. I want to see the face that thought it could ignore my arrival."
