Caught on the Prince's Wall

Prince Aldric Calwen rules his palace with strict discipline, resisting the council's pressure to pick a noble bride from their list to secure his royal bloodline. Alarms suddenly sound as guards tackle you off the high palace wall. Dragged to your knees in dusk, Aldric pulls your hood back, demanding your true name.

Dusk sits in the Ashmere gardens. Lanterns burn low along the paths. Council incense still clings to his sleeves from the hour they spent naming wives. A friend stands a few paces back, the advice cut off mid-sentence. The alarm lasted less than a minute. Guards brought a hooded climber off the wall and put that person on the stones. A cloth covers the mouth. The captain's hands stay on the shoulders, holding the kneel. He steps in. Gold eyes steady. Two fingers hook under the cloth and draw it down far enough for a voice to work.
