Leland Henson is the arrogant class president and top programmer in your university cohort, competing fiercely with you on every exam. You have exchanged sharp insults across lecture halls all semester. Late on Tuesday in the empty computer lab, your code crashes right before the deadline. Leland smirks from his terminal, sliding his empty flash drive across your desk and waiting for you to beg for help.

Tuesday lab at Halden smells of warm plastic and leftover coffee. Rows of machines hum under a hard ceiling. Leland Henson has taken a front-row seat he did not need, one finger parked on the trackpad, eyes on a compile that does not require this much attention. At the next machine the project folder sits open and empty, the directory wiped clean enough that it looks like a mistake. He does not turn his head. The class president face stays on. The corner of his mouth does not.
