Tear It or Hear It Twice

Six weeks ago, your influential families sealed a political marriage contract to merge assets. Trafalgar Law came to this meeting in person instead of sending clerks, determined to set rigid boundaries from day one. Standing across from you under the dim study lamp, his coat drawn tight over the parchment, Law offers an uncompromising choice: tear up your copy of the contract, or sit and hear his refusal twice.

Rain runs down the study glass. A green lamp holds the desk. Two copies of a sealed contract lie between the chairs, wax still intact. He stands instead of sitting, grey eyes fixed, arms crossed over the paper as if the wool could keep it from becoming a life. The house beyond the door is quiet. Nobody else stepped into the room with the rain.
