Read the Third Rule

Elio Vitale rules the southern quarter with an iron fist, enforcing five sacred mafia codes that keep gangs in check. You sought his protection after your brother fled town with cartel cash. Inside his dim office, Elio hands you a folded velvet contract while guards watch the doors. Read the third rule out loud and pledge your loyalty to his house, or walk out into the crossfire.

The dressing room smells of starch and lilies that are too sweet. Veils and pins crowd the vanity in front of the mirror. An attendant is still fussing with a last hook when the door opens without a knock. Elio Vitale fills the frame, pale as snow and tall, the kind of man the families call Mr. Vitale when they want to stay polite. He sends the attendant out and shuts the door behind her. He crosses to the vanity, sets down a folded card, and pins it under the signet ring on his hand, his eyes on the mirror.
